Pages 53-54: Spacewalk

Greetings! This time on Lyrae, the return of the spacesuits is at hand as Harv and Trev set foot outside the airlocks to fix the ship’s cooling system before everyone onboard is cooked.

Time is short and the smallest delay could spell disaster for our small crew. So naturally, some minor inconveniences must be resolved with otherwise-overkill solutions.

Pages 51-52: Peer Review

Greetings! After our brief holiday hiatus for the New Year, Lyrae is back with two new pages!

Last time, Harv found Trev drinking from a stash of contraband beer. Nonetheless, the Captain needs his helmsman suited up and ready for some deep-space maintenance if the Lyrae-III is to avoid melting to a heap of molten scrap metal.

And what is the plan that Captain and Cass were working on? It’s about time Trev was brought up to speed. Just as soon as Harv can get that beer bottle out of his hand.

Bonus Page: “January”

Greetings and Happy New Year!

With winter holiday plans keeping me away from my computer for almost a fortnight, the regularly scheduled continuation of “Lyrae” is still a couple weeks away.

Instead, while on holiday I sketched out the following bonus page to tease a little at the the background lore of the Bastion.

Ideally I would have had this page completed and ready to go out on the 2nd of January to match the regularly upload schedule, but sadly there was some trouble with lost luggage and airport couriers that kept me away from my sketching supplies. So a bit more work was needed before I was ready to ink and upload.

At least being back at me PC let me do add a bit of flourish with the digital tools.

I’ll see you on 16th of January for the next installment of Lyrae proper!

Pages 49-50: Rumbled

Greetings! Harv and Cass are ready to put a plan in action to save the Lyrae-3 from a deadly case of heatstroke. All they need to pull it off is a couple spacesuits and for Trev to be up and ready for action.

Oh dear. This may not be quite as simple as some would like.

Due to travel plans this Christmas I will not be updating the comic proper as scheduled on 2nd January. I may however have something extra in store to tide you over until the next update which will be Sunday 16th January.

Merry Christmas, dear readers.

Pages 47-48: Hydration

Greetings! Trev is understandably not taking well to being stranded on a crippled starship. With his nerves fraying, he is sent by Harv to have a break and catch a drink of water. Staying hydrated is important when you’re stuck with oven-like temperatures after all.

Obviously, this prompts Trev to visit the engine room. Way to stay focused, Trev. What’s he looking for anyway? Check out today’s pages to find out!

Pages 45-46: Heatwave

Greetings! Things are heating up this week, but not necessarily in a good way. In today’s pages, we return to the Lyrae-3 where Harv, Trev and Cass grapple with the consequences of their distraction tactics at the end of Chapter 1: a dangerously overworked cooling system.

While not quite as flashy a threat as the alien invaders that plagued Singh and Mel last chapter, it nonetheless has the beleaguered crew tired, desperate and running out of rope…

The website’s home page has also seen a revamp, featuring the most recent much more prominently. The old Chapter Select page has also been retired, its functionality merged into the home layout for a better flow.

Page 43-44: Professional Conduct

Greetings! I am incredibly pleased to announce that Chapter 2: Contact is done!

With the alien menace seemingly deterred, our team take a moment to rest. However, it isn’t long until the team’s new allies begin to take a dislike to the Executive…

Chapter 2 was an interesting piece of the story to work on, moving on from Chapter 1’s two settings of “cramped starship” and “wide empty space” to a more urban environment, which required the detail of the starship scenes across a much wider landscape. This lead to an experiment in time-saving that lead to, in my opinion, a rather interesting art direction.

In the outdoor part of the chapter, I experimented with digitally painted backdrops to depict the landscapes of Bastion, intending to evoke the matte backgrounds of old television scifi while cutting down on the number of vector assets needed per panel. I feel that this worked well for the open sky and the far background and would like to make more extensive use of the more painterly style in future.

A notable failure of this endeavor was the Archer Building. Its first appearance on Page 33 was initially to be as part of a painted coastal landscape. However, both the monorail track and power conduits, both elements running from the foreground into the background structure, resulted in a problem.

While the contrast between the foreground vector art and the background painted style proved quite pleasing to my eye, the transition between the two styles needed to make the scene work… didn’t work. And so the painted background was abandoned in favour of a vector rendition of the building.

The original Archer backdrop. In retrospect, the colours are also a perhaps a bit bright compared to the rest of the city scenes.

With that reflection on pragmatic art direction decisions out of the way, I present the conclusion of Chapter 2: Contact. Next time, we revisit the crew back onboard the Lyrae-III for Chapter 3: Heatwave!

Page 41-42: Another Vague Holiday

Greetings! In this penultimate entry of Chapter 2, we get a first peek at the alien invaders that have seen fit to invade Bastion.

By “we” I mainly mean Mel. And by “peek” I mean “direct line of sight while holding a laser gun.”

Yeah, the order in which Mel likes to a) shoot and b) ask questions should come as a surprise to no one at this point.

That said, we still get a quick look at the laser-toting fiend advancing on our heroes before the Executive tries to blast it. You may therefore consider this week’s pages to be an early Halloween special, if you squint.

First Independence Day and now Halloween. I wonder, what wishy-washy connection will I conjure up when Christmas rolls around?

Page 39-40: Do Not Use in Case of Fire

Greetings! This week, the team find themselves cornered in an elevator by a mysterious foe. With their backs against the wall, lasers are fired in anger and some common safety advice ends up disregarded.

Only one more month and two more uploads remain until we wrap up chapter 2. After that, we will join the rest of the Lyrae-3 crew and learn what trouble they have been up to since we last saw them.

Page 37-38: Stragglers on the Roof

Greetings! This week I am safely settled in my new abode and getting into the swing of the new day job. This means that I am comfortable enough with the new setup to resume the usual 2-page-per-fortnight upload schedule. Huzzah!

This time, Mel and Singh make it to the underground access elevator for the Archer building, bypassing the alien craft that blocks the surface elevator. But there are a couple final surprises left in store for them…

Chapter 2 is now entering its finale and will be concluded in just a couple more updates.
